How AI Is Changing Google (and What It Means for Your Website)

If you’ve been hearing a lot about AI lately and wondering what it means for your website, you’re not alone, there’s a lot of noise around it and some people are saying everything has changed.  Others are saying SEO (search engine optimisation) is dead.

Many small business owners are now confused, wondering if what they have been doing is now redundant and whether or not they have to start again.  The short answer is that they don't - things are evolving, but the fundamentals of getting your website noticed are still very much the same.

What’s Actually Changed?

Search engines like Google are now using AI to improve how they deliver results.  You may have noticed:

  • summaries appearing at the top of search results
  • more conversational answers
  • reduced need to click through multiple websites

This is often referred to as “AI search” or “AI-generated results”.  Behind the scenes, AI is helping Google:

  • understand what it is being asked for
  • connect ideas and topics more intelligently
  • provide content that feels useful

So yes, things are shifting.  But not in the way people often think.

What Hasn’t Changed

This is where I think people are overcomplicating things.  AI hasn’t suddenly replaced the need for a good website, it’s actually reinforced it.

Search engines still rely on clear, well-written content, trustworthy websites and relevant information.  If anything, AI is getting better at spotting what’s genuinely helpful and what isn’t.

So, the basics still matter - be clear about what you do and use natural, relevant language.  Keep your website up to date and build trust through reviews, links and content.

So… Do You Need to “Optimise for AI”?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions right now - you don’t need a separate strategy for AI.  There isn’t a hidden setting or a special tool that suddenly makes your website appear in AI results.

AI tools draw from:

  • websites they understand
  • content that answers questions clearly
  • sources that feel reliable

So if your website is already well structured, easy to understand and genuinely helpful, you are already doing all the right things.

What AI Is Encouraging (and Why It’s a Good Thing)

If we take a step back, the shift towards AI is actually pushing things in a better direction, it’s moving away from keyword stuffing, overly technical tricks and trying to “game” the system - these were all beyond the reach of non-specialists.

AI is driving traffic towards sites that offer clear explanations, useful content and real expertise.  If you are a small business owner, this is good news - you already know your business and these elements are well within your capabilities. You don’t need to be an SEO expert.

What You Should Focus On Instead

Rather than worrying about AI, focus on the things that actually make a difference.

1. Be Clear About What You Do

Your website should quickly answer:

  • what you do
  • who you help
  • where you’re based (if relevant)

This helps both people and search engines.

2. Answer Real Questions

Think about what your clients ask you all the time.  Turn those into:

  • website content
  • blog posts
  • FAQs

This is exactly the kind of content AI tools pull from.

3. Build Trust

AI doesn’t just look at your website in isolation.  It looks at signals such as:

  • reviews
  • backlinks (other websites linking to you)
  • mentions of your business

These all help build credibility.

4. Keep Your Website Active

You don’t need to constantly update everything but adding blog posts, new images and small regular updates shows that your website is active and relevant.

5. Stay Consistent

This hasn’t changed at all and is arguably the most important element.  A website that is:

  • regularly updated
  • supported by social media
  • connected to email marketing

…will always perform better than one that’s left alone after launch.

A Quick Reality Check

AI is not replacing websites.

People still:

  • browse
  • compare
  • look for reassurance
  • want to see who they’re buying from or working with

Your website is where that happens.

AI might introduce people to you but your website is what converts them.

Final Thought

If you take one thing from this, let it be this - you don’t need to panic about AI and you don’t need to completely change how you approach your website.

If anything, AI is making this world more transparent and this shift is rewarding websites that are clear, helpful and built with real people in mind
